ART CURRICULUM INTENT

INTENT:

At Ferring C.E Primary School we believe that art is a vital and integral part of children’s education. It provides them with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst enabling pupils to develop a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them. At Ferring we want children to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, sculpture and digital art and give them the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.

Through our sequenced curriculum, we want to continually inspire and excite our children by introducing new mediums, providing a growing range of skills, extending their knowledge of artists and always giving them something new which can be explored by immersing themselves in a given project. Wherever possible, we like to use Art and Design to provide opportunities for outdoor learning so the children can engage with their environment and realise that the joy of art is all around them. We want our children to enjoy art in all its forms and believe they have the potential to produce work that is appreciated and valued.

IMPLMENTATION:

Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists, architects and craft makers. Every year group focuses on a specific artist/ sculptor/ architect/ craft-maker such as; Betty Woodman, John Nash and Henry Moore to name just a few. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth. For example; pop-art illustrations to support the writing of a graphic novel, researching historical artefacts and using this understanding to design and create clay models (Greek vases), using art as a medium to express emotion which is thought to enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Children will develop their understanding of art through effective teaching and carefully thought out sequences of lessons and experiences. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing an accessible and engaging curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. Children of Ferring are provided with opportunities to discover and explore art within our abundant local environment. For example; Andy Goldsworthy inspired beach sculptures, Vincent Van Gogh inspired observational drawings from the South Downs.

As part of our engaging cross-curricular approach, we use the teaching and learning of Art for the children to create products which are sold during our Money Matters week. The focus of this week if to raise money for a local charity and it gives our children a sense of purpose and achievement.

During an Art topic, children are taught on a weekly basis to allow them to fully immerse themselves into the creative process. A carefully sequenced curriculum means children develop their skills during their time at Ferring. For example, when developing drawing skills and techniques children move from exploring to developing specific disciplines to using a range of mediums in an effective way with reasoning behind their choices.

INTENDED IMPACT:

By the time children leave Ferring Primary School, they have experienced a full range of inspiring Artists and Designers, have formed personal opinions about their favoured styles and techniques and have had the opportunity to practice and hone their skills. They are ready to explore art in greater depth in secondary school with a secure foundation of skills inspired by their knowledge of local and international artists. Our children talk enthusiastically about their experiences in art and can share examples of their work produced which they are proud of.
