COMPUTING CURRICULUM IMPACT

INTENT:

At Ferring CE Primary School we believe that Computing is an essential part of the curriculum and we want our children to experience a high quality computing education.  This should be achieved through a combination of stand-alone lessons and cross curricular opportunities which acknowledges computing as integral to other curriculum areas.  With this approach the children will develop transferrable skills within computing and across the curriculum to equip them for an ever changing digital world.   Lessons are focused on developing a progression of knowledge and skills by revisiting previously taught content through a range of themes.   The fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding they gain will support the next steps in their learning, within our school, into secondary school and further education and ultimately employment.  We recognise that computing is a significant part of everyone’s daily life, in school, at home and in employment.  By creating autonomous, independent learners who are resilient and creative problem solvers as well as ‘computational thinkers’ we are giving them the outstanding grounding they need to succeed and ACHIEVE in life and to participate effectively and safely in a digital world.   Ultimately, we want our children to be engaged in their learning and to feel they have a strong understanding of how to use technology safely and respectfully and to pair their GROWING knowledge with a safe approach to the use of technology.

IMPLEMENTATION:

The implementation of our computing curriculum is shaped by our whole school vision of creating an outstanding school where children are valued and thrive. We teach to the National Curriculum for Computing, on a weekly basis, across both KS1 and KS2 and meet the needs of our children in Early Years.  Teachers use the ‘Switched On: Computing’ scheme, published by Rising Stars, as a starting point for the planning of their computing lessons, which are often richly linked to engaging contexts in other subjects and topics.  The use of this Scheme of Work ensures a detailed coverage of the expectations of the National Curriculum and the opportunity to build, year on year, on the skills and knowledge the children develop.  A range of good quality resources (including Clevertouch Interactive Whiteboards, Laptops and ipads for each KS) are used to enhance the children’s learning experiences.  Crucially, e-safety plays a part in every single unit in this Scheme of Work so children are perpetually exposed to the skills they need to stay safe and be responsible users of technology.  In addition to this, as a whole school we take part in the national ‘Safer Internet Day’ every year in February (some of our past efforts can be seen on our e-safety page on the website).

INTENDED IMPACT:

The children are assessed using criteria within the Switched on scheme of work and aligned to the National Curriculum outcomes at the end of each unit they complete.  As a result of strong teaching and learning, children will be digitally literate and will be competent and safe users of technology, able to benefit from their learning and support their continued learning in Ferring CE Primary School, secondary school, further education and employment.  As children become more confident and BELIEVE in their abilities in Computing, they will become more independent, more creative and key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation become second nature.  The most significant impact we want on our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.
