GEOGRAPHY CURRICULUM INTENT

INTENT:

At Ferring C.E Primary School we believe our Geography Curriculum should inspire children’s curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people.  We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Ferring and Worthing so that they can develop of real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.  Through this, our children GROW as individuals who understand themselves in the context of their surroundings.  Our teaching will equip children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and human and natural environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and processes. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject. Through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it and to BELIEVE they have the skills to explore the world around them. As pupils progress they will gather a deeper understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments as well as developing a good understanding of political boundaries enhancing a knowledge of local, national and international place.

IMPLEMENTATION:

In order to foster children’s curiosity about the world, interest and creativity, we are enthusiastic about Geography and encourage children to explore and ask questions. At Ferring CE Primary School, in Key Stage 1, Geography is taught through a skills/topic based curriculum which follows a carefully planned transition from the Early Years to suit the needs and chronological age of each class. We ensure coverage of the National Curriculum across all year groups and enable teachers’ autonomy to use the use this to select objectives and tailor teaching and learning to meet the needs and interests of the children in their class. By the end of Year Two, it is expected that the children will have developed their knowledge and understanding of all of the skills set out in the National Curriculum for Key Stage One.

In Key Stage Two topic teaching is used to progress children’s knowledge and skills. Each class has a long-term plan with two to three Geography topics, which are covered over the year. Topics generally alternate with History. Geography can also be linked into some History topics, where appropriate, creating relevant cross-curricular links. This will also ensure all areas of the National Curriculum are covered and give opportunities to study in greater depth. All staff are encouraged to consider opportunities available to use our amazing school grounds and the local environment, the seaside, for fieldwork to enable children to base learning on first hand experience.

INTENDED IMPACT:

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. Children will ACHIEVE the age related expectation within Geography and have developed the geographical knowledge and skills to help them explore, navigate and understand the world around them and their place in it. Children’s knowledge and skills will develop progressively as they move through the school. The children will develop a sound understanding of locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork.
