Summer 2016

April - Football and Netball Presentation

The children that have attended our Football and Netball Clubs and have competed in competitions this year enjoyed a presentation ceremony led by Miss Bennett and Mrs Hall. The children were acknowledged for their commitment to the clubs and the teams and for the successes they have achieved this year.  Certificates were awarded and trophies given to 'Best Newcomer', 'The Most Improved player', 'Players' Player of the Year', 'Golden Boot' (football) 'Manager's Player of the Year' (football) and 'Coaches Player of the Year' (netball).  Well done to everyone and thank you to Miss Bennett and Mrs Hall for all your hard work.

May - Music Assemblies

We have been enjoying a range of music assemblies this term which have introduced the children to a variety of musical possibilities.

This has included using ICT in music with a visit from Tom Phillips (a music student from Northbrook College) who demonstrated how to create music electronically.                           We also had a visit from Rocksteady (a band that teaches children about rock instruments and introduces them to rock music).  They gave a marvellous performance and explained the different instruments they used.  They will be returning with a view to providing workshops and additional lessons.                                                                                                        One of our Dads, Mr Turner and Take 6 kindly wowed us with their marvellous performance using a range of saxophones from soprano to base.  They played tunes that the children were familiar with and thoroughly enjoyed.

Below is a selection of photos from these assemblies so you can enjoy some of the moments the children have experienced.

May - Year 6 SATs Breakfast Club

The children in Year 6 have been working very hard towards their SATs tests and we are all so proud of their efforts.  To keep their spirits up and start the day in a positive, relaxed manner, they have been coming in and enjoying breakfast together.  A full tummy and good conversation has been the best way to begin the day.

May - Ferring Fest 2016

We enjoyed another successful Ferring Fest event this Summer Term.  Once again we had a variety of entertainment acts from all of the classes as well as some guest performers. There was a range of stalls and activities which were enjoyed by all.  Well done and thank you to everyone that took part, helped in the organisation and attended what was a very enjoyable event.

June - Science Workshop: Renewable Energy

Some of our enthusiastic and talented Scientists in Years 5 and 6 took part in a Science morning.  We were lucky enough to have George Turnbull, a STEM ambassador, come in to teach the children about renewable and sustainable energy.  They learned about different types of renewable energy and the benefits to our planet of these alternative sources of energy.  They focused particularly on wind and solar energy.  The children created their own wind turbines and solar panels and measured the amount of energy they created.  They altered some of the variables to test the impact on the amount of energy created, for example simulating cloud cover over the solar panels and altering the number of blades on the wind turbines.  They certainly realised the positive effects that such sources of energy could have on our environment (not to mention the financial benefits).  Here are some pictures from the workshop.

June - West Sussex Library Service assembly

We had some visitors from the West Sussex Library Service deliver an exciting assembly to share the 2016 Summer Reading Challenge - The Big Friendly Read.  Libraries everywhere are celebrating 100 years of the world's favourite storyteller - Roald Dahl and encouraging children to enjoy reading this summer.  The children found out what they have to do to take part in the event.  We hope they will all take part and enjoy reading the variety of books that are on offer at Ferring Library.

July - A talented musician

We were lucky enough to enjoy a performance from Ned Bishop in Year 6.  Ned has been learning to play the drums and gave the whole school a taste of what he can do during our assembly.  Well done and thank you Ned.  Glastonbury awaits!

July - A special Mayoral visit

Ferring CE Primary School was delighted to welcome the Mayor of Worthing, Cllr. Sean McDonald, for a visit which was organised by one of the pupils, Chloe Payne.  He was escorted around the classes by Chloe and her classmate Rosie, and he talked to the children about how he had been appointed by the Queen and what his role was as the 100th Worthing Mayor.  He invited the children to ask questions which he answered, and these included “Who was the first Mayor?” and “What are the different parts of the chain of office?”

The Mayor enjoyed his tour around the school, and he was particularly impressed that classes were fundraising for St. Barnabas House as that is one of his chosen charities to support.  “I was very happy to be invited to Ferring CE Primary School and to speak to the children in their classrooms,” he commented.  “The children were polite, pleasant and very engaging. They were interested in my role and asked some very searching questions. It was a delight to attend this excellent school.  The Headteacher, teachers and the pupils themselves should be very proud of their achievements. I hope all my school visits are as memorable as this one was.”

“It was a pleasure to welcome the Mayor,” added Mrs. Silk, the Headteacher.  “The children were interested to meet him and to learn about what he does and why he does it, and they were fascinated by the chain of office.  It was very kind of him to visit and share insights into this aspect of British culture.”
